New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has certainly not made a habit of trading down in his time as a top executive. As a matter of fact, the 2021 NFL Draft was his ninth as an NFL general manager, and it marked the first time Gettleman had ever made a move down in the draft.

Perhaps he has been worried all this time about another team trying to rake him over the coals for a player. Maybe he doesn’t want to be looked at as the guy who traded down from a spot where a generational player was taken.

Whatever the case, Gettleman and the New York Giants made a pretty substantial move down in the 2021 NFL Draft with the Chicago Bears. The Bears, of course, traded up in the first round of the 2021 Draft to select Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

The Giants moved down to pick number 20 overall and took Florida receiver Kadarius Toney, another big-time playmaker for their star-studded group of offensive skill players.

What also happened with this trade down was the New York Giants adding to an impressive haul of 2022 NFL Draft capital.

New York Giants 2022 NFL Draft picks

Here’s a look, round-by-round, of what picks the New York Giants currently own in the 2022 NFL Draft.

  • 1st round
  • 1st round (from Bears)
  • 2nd round
  • 3rd round
  • 3rd round (from Dolphins)
  • 4th round
  • 4th round (from Bears)
  • 5th round
  • 6th round
  • 7th round

The Giants hold 10 picks total, including five picks in the top 100 picks and seven picks in the top four rounds.

The fascinating pick here is the Chicago Bears first-round pick. Right now, that selection is projected to be in the top-12 picks, and there is reason to believe that could end up being accurate.

The Bears found a way to make the playoffs in 2020, but with either Andy Dalton or a rookie quarterback (Fields) under center, there’s a chance that is a team that could really struggle offensively.

If that ends up happening, the Giants would obviously be set up really well, especially if they can exceed the somewhat low expectations they’re facing in 2021.

New York also stands a decent chance of getting a really good third-round pick from the Miami Dolphins. Miami was obviously almost a playoff team in 2020 and they have a really strong roster overall, but with Tua Tagovailoa now the unquestioned QB1, how are things going to go for that offense?

Gettleman’s fear of getting fleeced in a trade-down scenario certainly should be squashed at this point with an outstanding value coming back from Chicago in the form of a first-round pick (and fourth-round pick) as well as that third-round pick from the Dolphins.

It’s not altogether unrealistic to think the New York Giants could end up with five picks within the top 80 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.
