Las Vegas Raiders: Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU

Round 2, 43rd Overall

The Las Vegas Raiders were extremely close to a playoff berth last season, but surprised many in the offseason when they gutted their offensive line. They traded Trent Brown back to the Patriots, and let go of longtime center Rodney Hudson, and sent Gabe Jackson packing as well. It shed a lot of cap money, but brought about a lot of questions.

Offensive line was certainly the focus for the Raiders heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, and they selected Alabama tackle Alex Leatherwood in the first round. This was puzzling, but kept a streak going of odd round one selections by general manager Mike Mayock. Leatherwood could be a fine tackle and better guard, but he wasn’t their best selection.

That was TCU safety Trevon Moehrig, widely considered the best safety prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft. Moehrig will give the Raiders secondary a great umbrella on the back end. His route recognition skills are top notch, and he’s a physical tackler in space. Moehrig also has the versatility to play in the slot and the box, but based on their other picks at safety, it’s likely he will play deep as a rookie.

Moehrig’s ability to be the glue holding together a secondary is why he was easily the Raiders’ best selection in the draft.
