2022 NFL Draft: Don’t sleep on Boston College QB Phil Jurkovec
The 2021 NFL Draft is barely in the books and some players haven’t even got to put on their new uniforms yet, but that’s not going to prevent 2022 NFL Draft talk.
A year ago at this time, the big three quarterback prospects being talked about ended up being three of the top four guys off the board, including presumptive top overall pick Trevor Lawrence to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Zach Wilson out of BYU came out of pretty much nowhere in 2020 to become the second overall pick in 2021 just like Joe Burrow did the year prior, Baker Mayfield the year before that, and so on.
We’ve already taken a look at some of the intriguing quarterback prospects for the 2022 NFL Draft class but one name to keep an eye on who was not on the breakout watch list? Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec.
Tim Jenkins, a quarterback coach, guru, and former NFL player himself says that NFL Draft fans need to keep their eyes on Jurkovec this season.
Running a “pro-style” offense in college may not carry the same weight it once did with more and more guys transitioning from college systems to the pro game these days, but it’s still important nonetheless because more than just running a pro-style offense, you’re talking about quarterbacks being able to read coverages, understand certain concepts, take certain drops, and make reads that might be asked of NFL players.
Jenkins points in this clip to the excellent coaching Jurkovec is getting at Boston College, another thing that can’t really be overstated as he transitions to the NFL.
So who is Jurkovec? Everybody knows about another QB in the ACC in North Carolina’s Sam Howell, who is being touted as potentially the QB1 or QB2 of the 2022 NFL Draft class.
Jurkovec was a four-star recruit coming out of high school, considered a dual-threat quarterback who committed to play at Notre Dame.
After it became apparent that he was not going to get Ian Book’s job, Jurkovec transferred to Boston College and became the full-time starter for the Eagles in 2020. He completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,558 yards and 17 touchdowns in 10 games, also adding three rushing touchdowns.
Although many have been worried about the talent level of the 2022 NFL Draft class at quarterback compared to the 2021 NFL Draft, it’s obvious at this point that there’s more to the 2022 class than meets the eye.
Jurkovec is just one of a variety of names to be keeping an eye on as we progress toward the 2021 college football season.
