Chicago Bears: Five potential first-round targets in 2021 NFL Draft
Greg Newsome II, CB, Northwestern
The Chicago Bears went into this offseason knowing they would have to make some tough roster decisions due to their cap space situation. However, I don’t think anybody had predicted that they would cut former All-Pro cornerback, Kyle Fuller. The surprising move leaves the Bears with a huge question mark at the cornerback position but they could answer that question by selecting Greg Newsome II out of Northwestern.
Newsome II has seen a huge boost in his draft stock over the last couple of months and for good reason. He’s got all the size, quickness, and versatility that every team needs at the position. He shows really refined technique and is just so smooth in everything he does. There is no drop-off in his ability when switching defensive looks, as he looks just as comfortable in man as he does in zone. There really isn’t much not to like about Newsome II as a 2021 NFL Draft prospect.
Right now, the Chicago Bears’ top two outside corners are Jaylon Johnson and 2021 free-agent signee, Desmond Trufant. Johnson was superb as a rookie in 2020, but Trufant is coming off of an injury-riddled season in Detroit and will be 31 when the season kicks off. Adding a young talent like Newsome would make a lot of sense.
