2021 NFL mock draft: Round 1, 6th overall

6. Player Stats. Pick Analysis. WR. LSU. Ja'Marr Chase. player. 59

Friday was a busy day for the Miami Dolphins. First, they traded down from the No. 3 overall pick, dropping down to No. 12 and picking up two other first-round selections (2022 and 2023) and a third-round pick in 2022. Before we could even fully comprehend what happened in that deal, the Dolphins moved back up the board, sending No. 12, their 2022 first-round pick and a mid-round pick swap to the Philadelphia Eagles for pick No. 6

After these trades, the Dolphins feel like they have landed in the soft spot at the beginning of the first round. With the top quarterbacks expected to go early, the Dolphins have put themselves in a good position to land one of the premier non-quarterbacks in this class. Ja’Marr Chase stands out as the ideal target for Miami at No. 6.

Chase is the premier prospect in an absolutely loaded draft class at the wide receiver position. He displays elite route-running ability, soft hands and is a dynamic playmaker after the catch. Chase shows the ability to separate against man coverage in the short, intermediate and deep passing games and also has a knack for finding the soft spots against zone. He attacks the ball in the air incredibly well, skying high to snatch the ball away from defenders in contested-catch situations regularly.

Chase does not possess elite speed at the wide receiver position but he is explosive enough to stretch the field vertically. He also changes directions on a dime and has unique contact balance for a wide receiver prospect. These skills lead to Chase having a ton of success after the catch and make him a dynamic offensive weapon all over the field.

The Eagles could certainly use an influx of talent at the wide receiver position and Chase is the best of the bunch in this draft class. Snagging him at No. 6 feels like an easy choice for the Miami Dolphins here as they find Tua Tagovailoa a true number one option in the passing game.
