Washington Football Team top draft targets after Ryan Fitzpatrick move
2. Greg Newsome, CB, Northwestern
The Washington Football Team was hoping to re-sign free agent cornerback Ronald Darby, who had an excellent 2020 season in Ron Rivera’s defense.
The Denver Broncos poached Darby away from Washington, creating a void in the secondary.
Although the Washington defense was certainly outstanding last season, they need guys on the back end who can make plays on the ball with that defensive front creating so much pressure.
Although I think Washington is slated to emphasize offense in the upcoming class, the cornerback position is very much on the table in the first round and there are a number of guys who would make sense.
We know Washington has an affinity for former Alabama players, so perhaps if Patrick Surtain II starts slipping, they will try to move up to get him. Maybe they will fall in love with Jaycee Horn of South Carolina or Caleb Farley out of Virginia Tech will drop far enough to go up and get.
Regardless of which guys are available, Greg Newsome out of Northwestern is a name to keep an eye on.
Newsome has outstanding size, length, speed, and ball skills at the position. Combined with his inside-out versatility, I think he could be a major impact player in year one if he lands with the Washington Football Team.
