4. Chris Godwin, 3rd round, 2017 NFL Draft

One of the best wide receiver tandems in the NFL is located in Tampa Bay, with the combination of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. This combination helped the Buccaneers place second in the NFL in passing yards per game, as they averaged 287.1 yards per game. Tampa Bay was expecting big things when they drafted Evans with the seventh pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, but they got a steal when they drafted Godwin with the 84th pick in 2017.

Some of the knocks on Godwin coming out of Penn State included not being able to gain separation consistently despite running a 4.42 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. He also was knocked for not being very dangerous after the catch as he only averaged 4.5 yards after the catch. One more concern with him was his hands as he dropped 7.8 of the passes thrown his way according to Pro Football Focus, which ranked him 129th among receivers in 2016.

Despite establishing himself as one of the better young receivers in the NFL, he does still battle with some of these issues, including drops. In the team’s playoff game against Washington, he had five drops, although he did show reliable hands for a majority of the rest of the season.

Godwin has also shown incredible hands in contested catches as he hauled in 68% of these passes over the past two years. So his issue is more of a concentration problem than just the fact he has bad hands.

The big question coming up with Godwin is what the team will do with him next year. Godwin will be a free agent this offseason, and will surely attract plenty of interest. Due to this, the team will have to decide if he is worth the big money and possibly the franchise tag, or if they are comfortable going forward with just Mike Evans and Antonio Brown.
