Chris Godwin, WR, Penn State: 2017 NFL Draft Scouting Report
By Brady Lunt
Chris Godwin played a major role in the turnaround of the Penn State football program. A role that will likely lead him to the NFL, where we can continue to produce at a high level.
After a major scandal rocked the Penn State football program, many wondered if the Nittany Lions would be able to restore the success of years past. With recruiting crippled and the head coaching staff stripped, not to mention players that decommitted, it seemed the future was dark. Little did we know that in just a few short years, Penn State would once again be one of the top teams in the country. While several players can be given credit for the rise the rankings, Chris Godwin stands out as one of the offensive leaders.
His play against the USC Trojans in the Rose Bowl, his last college game, demonstrated his effectiveness on the field. Godwin finished with nine catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns. His performance was one of many that showed just how effective he could be in the NFL.
Measurables
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 210 lbs
40-yard: 4.42
Vertical: 36.0 inches
Strengths
At 6’1″ with a 4.42 40-yard time, Godwin possesses a unique blend of size and athleticism. He has the speed to be a dangerous vertical threat while carrying the size to make plays on short and intermediate routes. He’s a real competitor that fights for every yard and looks to make an impact on every play. Has shown a willing mindset when it comes to downfield blocking. Doesn’t shy away from contact, instead seemingly thrives in it. Uses his hands well to snatch the ball out of the air. Was the leading receiver for the Nittany Lions and, despite a dropoff from 2015 to 2016, maintained consistent production.
Weaknesses
While he plays physical and has the speed to play vertically, seems to struggle with separation. Improved route-running will only help his case and make him more productive at the next level. Needs to learn to how to better use size to his advantage. A simplified offense at Penn State may mean more dedication to the playbook in the NFL.
Final Thoughts
Chris Godwin is one of my favorite players in this draft. He isn’t a first-round draft pick, but he should be an early selection with the capability to start right away as a WR2. His combination of size, speed, and athleticism will intrigue most scouts and give him an opportunity to be very productive at the next level.
