2021 NFL Draft: 49ers make aggressive move for QB in 3-round mock draft
2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, 6th overall
The Philadelphia Eagles have become an absolute mess. Not only did they finish in last place of the abysmal NFC East with a 4-11-1 record this season, but they also have arguably the worst cap situation in the entire NFL. The regression of quarterback Carson Wentz has absolutely killed this team and it is difficult to see them turning it around soon unless Wentz unexpectedly stays in Philly and gets back on track.
While there is not much to get excited about with this team, they do have the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, putting them in a position to add a legitimate impact player to the mix. Expect the Eagles to target either a cornerback or wide receiver with this pick and they have a couple of worthy options at both positions. That being said, Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver DeVonta Smith stands out as the premier choice for this team.
Smith is an absolute game-breaker at the wide receiver position who is a fantastic playmaker in the short, intermediate and deep passing games. Smith is also an elite route runner who uses fantastic quickness, efficient movements and tremendous burst and acceleration to consistently create space from defenders all over the field.
The Alabama product also catches everything thrown near him and is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands. Some will question Smith because of his slight frame but he plays much stronger than he looks. Plus, his combination of speed, quickness and acceleration make up for any strength deficiencies that he may have.
Simply put, DeVonta Smith is an elite wide receiver prospect who has massive upside at the next level. The Eagles need to invest resources in helping whoever ends up taking snaps for them under center and adding a true number one receiver like Smith would certainly do that.
