New York Jets 2021 Mock Draft: What if the Jets passed on a quarterback?
It’s been quite some time since the New York Jets have had a pass rusher wreak havoc for their defensive line. The interior looks promising with second-year defensive tackle Quinnen Williams breaking out. Now, it’s time for the rushers on the outside to get after the quarterback.
Miami’s Jaelan Phillips is slowly seeing his stock rise and has been mocked in the first round plenty recently. The first-round hype is warranted, as he turned a corner for the Hurricanes in 2020. Phillips is a spectacular athlete who can win with speed around the edge and get offensive linemen to overset, beating them with a wicked inside move.
He has good length and uses it to his advantage to keep linemen off-balance. He’d be a great addition here.
The 2021 NFL Draft is shaping up to have overwhelming offensive line depth, both at tackle and on the interior. While he hasn’t officially declared yet, USC’s Alijah Vera-Tucker is primed to go on day two of the draft in April.
Vera-Tucker moved from guard to left tackle in 2020 and made that transition with ease. He’s stout at the point of attack, displays great balance, and does a good job framing rushers in pass protection. His versatility will be coveted, and he’d be great for the Jets here.
