The tight end position has been the most obvious need for the New England Patriots, and many expect them to opt for first-round prospect Kyle Pitts out of Florida. Although Pitts is definitely the most impressive tight end of the 2021 NFL draft after having shown immense improvement in his run-blocking ability, there may be a better fit for the New England Patriots in their own backyard.

Boston College tight end Hunter Long has burst onto the scene throughout the 2020 college football season, continuing to command more and more attention with his impressive performances.

Long is a six-foot-five size mismatch who uses his size and an impressive understanding of route-running to make himself a safety blanket for his quarterback. On more than one occasion, Long can be seen stemming his short crossing-route upfield behind an underneath zone-defender to relieve his quarterback from incoming pressure.

Even at just a glance, Long immediately draws comparisons to former Patriots’ All-Pro Rob Gronkowski with his proficiency in splitting the seam and coming across the face of defenders on crossing routes.

Long uses his frame well to block-out defenders and give his quarterback an easier throw. Long is also no slouch in run-blocking, using all 253 pounds with fundamental technique to hold the edge and help in pass-protection.
