2021 NFL Draft scouting report on Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi

Penei Sewell is the top offensive tackle in the 2021 NFL Draft class and there is likely nothing that will change that. However, there is plenty of exciting talent in this class at the position for any teams looking to address their offensive tackle situation in the first round.

Today, we are going to dig into the game of Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi and try to determine whether he is a first-round worthy 2021 NFL Draft prospect.

Samuel Cosmi, OT, Texas

Class: Redshirt Junior
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 309 pounds

Cosmi was an undersized and under-recruited three-star offensive tackle prospect from Texas out of high school. He originally committed to Houston early in the process, but got an offer from the Longhorns late and quickly joined the program in Austin.

He redshirted during his first year on campus, using the 2017 season to bulk up and get ready for the college game. He took over as the Longhorns’ starting right tackle in 2018 and was named a freshman All-American for his play on the field.

Cosmi flipped over to left tackle for the 2019 season, had immediate success, earning second-team All-Big 12 honors. He returned to Texas for another year in 2020 and continued to shine at left tackle before leaving a bit early to get ready for the 2021 NFL Draft.

While he lacks ideal thickness up front, Cosmi is a tall and long offensive tackle prospect whose arm length is a major advantage in pass protection. Cosmi is a smooth athlete who displays impressive lateral agility and maintains balance well on the field.

In the run game, Cosmi does a great job of using his quickness to his advantage to get in position. He understands angles well and has the mobility needed to be an impact blocker at the next level. Cosmi is not the most powerful player at the point of attack, but he has strong hands and shows good competitive toughness. He can mix it up against size and at least hold his own against bigger defensive linemen a majority of the time.

Cosmi really shines in pass protection, using his athleticism and length to consistently shine in this area. He is a high IQ player who understands his responsibilities and will not be fooled by stunts and unique blitz packages. Cosmi also uses his quickness well to recover against speed when needed. His ability to sink in and anchor against power also stands out as a solid skill pass protection skill.

Overall, Cosmi’s athleticism at the offensive tackle position consistently stands out and makes him a potential impact player at the next level. He could quickly grow into a real franchise left tackle, securing one of the most important offensive positions for his NFL team. Cosmi should undoubtedly be a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and could easily challenge for OT2 behind Sewell.
