Texas OT Samuel Cosmi will forgo rest of season, enter 2021 NFL Draft
Texas OT Samuel Cosm is ending his season early and will enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
Penei Sewell stands tall as the top offensive tackle prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft prospect by most. Sewell is a truly special offensive tackle prospect who will likely be a top-five pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. While Sewell is great, he is not the only gifted offensive tackle in the class and one of the other top players, Samuel Cosmi out of Texas, has now officially entered the mix.
On Sunday, Cosmi announced on Twitter that he will not play the remaining games on Texas’ schedule. “My goal is to prepare for the NFL Draft and work towards that dream of mine,” Cosmi wrote in his post.
The timing of this decision may seem odd on the surface, but it does make sense after Texas’ loss to Iowa State on Friday. That loss to the Cyclones all but eliminates Texas from Big 12 contention. The Longhorns will not be playing for any sort of championship this season, allowing Cosmi an opportunity to shut it down with only two games remaining.
Cosmi now enters the mix as the possible OT2 in the 2021 NFL Draft class. He is an impressive athlete for an offensive lineman who shows a ton of natural upside in pass protection. Cosmi is still a bit of a raw player, but he has a chance to become the best pass protector in the 2021 NFL Draft class. In today’s NFL where the passing game is king, a high-level pass protector like Cosmi will obviously demand a ton of attention.
As the 2021 NFL Draft process continues to unfold, Cosmi will likely be battling guys like Virginia Tech’s Christian Darrisaw, Northwestern’s Rashawn Slater and Michigan’s Jalen Mayfield as the OT2 in this class. Cosmi’s obvious athleticism and upside in pass protection could give him an edge over the others when it is all said and done.

No matter how it all shakes out, whoever ends up landing Cosmi will be happy with their selection. He is an extremely talented prospect who will bring major value to the team at an incredibly important position.
