2021 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears trade up for QB in two-round mock draft
Following in the footsteps of the Miami Dolphins from a year ago, the Jacksonville Jaguars use the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft to snag their quarterback of the future and a potential franchise left tackle to protect him.
Samuel Cosmi likely would have been a first-round pick had he entered the draft a year ago. Instead, he opted to go back to Texas, but has recently opted out of the 2020 season and entered the 2021 NFL Draft.
Cosmi isn’t my favorite tackle prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft, but he does have the potential to be a starting left tackle if he develops correctly. There are a couple of flaws in his game right now, but if he works out some kinks and gains some play strength he has the potential to thrive at the next level.
Cosmi has an optimal frame for a tackle but needs to fill it out more to withstand the powerful rushes he will face in the NFL. His footwork can get sloppy at times, but in general, his pass sets are fairly sound and he is able to keep rushers at bay.
Once he is engaged, Cosmi has powerful hands to move defenders. He stands up pass rushers and turns defenders in the run game to open holes. As a pass blocker, he can sometimes open himself up a little too much, making him vulnerable to inside moves.
As a run blocker, Cosmi is always looking to put a helmet on a helmet. He finishes blocks to the ground and immediately moves on to the next one. He moves well and excels at getting to the second level.
With Jawaan Taylor at right tackle and now Cosmi on the left side, the Jags could move on from Cam Robinson or maybe even bump him inside to guard. Getting and protecting a new quarterback will be the priority for whatever new regime comes into Jacksonville.
