2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, 4th Overall

QB. North Dakota State. 4. player. 58. Pick Analysis. Trey Lance. Scouting Report

BYU quarterback Zach Wilson has come from seemingly out of nowhere to become one of the top prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft class. Many in the draft community appear to have placed Wilson above Trey Lance at this point in the process, but I am not quite at that point yet. Wilson is great (and will not last long in this mock draft), but I still think that Lance is the better prospect, making him the pick for the Washington Football team here at No. 4.

We have not been able to see much from Lance this season and there will certainly be plenty of unknown surrounding him as the 2021 NFL Draft approaches, but Lance was absolutely dominant last season and is worthy of going this high.

With the COVID-19 pandemic costing Lance all but one game of his 2020 season, he only spent one year as the starting quarterback at North Dakota State. Lance was absolutely fantastic as a redshirt freshman last season, completing 66.9% of his passes for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns. He did not throw a single interception last season and also piled up 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

Lance put up monster numbers in his only season as a starting college quarterback, but many will question some of those numbers because of the level of competition. While that is fair, one does not have to watch much of Lance to see that he is a legitimate high-level NFL quarterback prospect.

This guy has a legitimate NFL arm and understands the game at a high level. He also shows incredible poise in the pocket, fantastic accuracy to all levels of the field and knows how to attack the weakness of the defense. Lance is arguably the best rushing quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft class and also has a ton of upside as a passer.

Ideally, Lance would land with a team that can bring him along slowly and let him learn from the bench for a few games. Washington may not be the perfect situation for that scenario, but Lance’s raw talent is too obvious to ignore in this spot. The Washington Football Team finds their franchise quarterback here at No. 4 as they look to make a big move in a weak NFC East.
