First round: 49ers Trading up for BYU QB Zach Wilson

The 49ers would probably have to move some draft capital beyond 2021 in order to get this deal done if their present 2021 NFL Draft position holds.

They are currently projected to pick 15th overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and that likely isn’t going to be high enough to get Zach Wilson, as well as he has played this season.

With Wilson significantly on the rise, the 49ers would have to move well inside the top 10 picks to get him and potentially inside the top 5-7 just to be sure.

Why would they consider doing this?

First and foremost, you don’t consider a move like this unless your team has very few needs overall. The 49ers have been riddled with injuries this season, but when healthy, they are a very good all-around roster with balance offensively and defensively.

The other major reason to consider this? Wilson’s obvious fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

While Wilson is capable of moving the ball as a pocket passer, he’s also tremendous at getting outside of the pocket and making plays on the move or with his legs.

Wilson has a little bit of Patrick Mahomes to his game with the utmost confidence in his skills as a passer and runner, and he’s been very accurate so far in the 2020 season for the Cougars.

Sitting behind Garoppolo for a bit and then taking the reins later on in Kyle Shanahan’s offense could be the perfect fit for Wilson at the next level.
