Washington Football Team 3-round NFL mock draft: Zach Wilson and more
Round 1, 7th Overall
A tough decision arises for the Washington Football Team right off of the bat here at No. 7 overall. Ideally, one of Lawrence, Fields or Lance would be available here, but they are not. Top offensive tackle prospect Penei Sewell is also off of the board, which is also less than ideal.
Taking a top cornerback prospect like Patrick Surtain II or Caleb Farley could make some sense, but Kendall Fuller has been fantastic this season, making cornerback a much lesser need for the team than previously expected. In the end, wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase stood out as the most logical selection for Washington at No. 7.
Chase is a dynamic weapon in the passing game who is a legitimate threat to the defense at all three levels. He is a smooth route runner who can separate from man coverage with ease and always seems to find space against zone. Chase also shows impressive jump-ball skills, controlling his body in the air extremely well and using his strong hands to snatch the ball away from defenders in tight spaces.
Chase is not the most explosive athlete, but he is elusive and powerful with the ball in his hands. He is difficult to bring down for any defensive back and that leads to more run after catch upside than one would normally expect out of a receiver who does not feature elite speed in his game.
Simply put, Chase is a talented and consistent prospect who will be a dangerous playmaker at the next level. The Washington Football Team may not yet know who their long-term franchise quarterback will be, but a wide receiver duo of Chase and Terry McLaurin would be incredibly exciting and make any young quarterback better.
