Denzel Mims provided a spark for the New York Jets offensively.

If any NFL team needs a spark offensively right now, it’s the New York Jets.

The Jets have struggled badly during the 2020 season to get anything going offensively, averaging a league-worst 12.1 points per game and also with the lowest yardage output in the league and the least first down plays of any team in the NFL.

It’s been a very sad 0-7 start for the New York Jets, who look like the leaders in the NFL right now — by far — in the Trevor Lawrence 2021 sweepstakes.

That kind of offensive output isn’t going to get you many — if any — wins in the NFL, but to be fair to the Jets, their offensive skill players have also struggled to stay healthy as well.

In particular, the wide receiver position has been decimated by injuries, none as noticeable as the absence of rookie second-round pick Denzel Mims out of Baylor.

The 6-foot-3 Mims came into the NFL with some of the most insane pre-draft metrics of any player at his position in a draft class loaded with talented receivers. He broke the 4.4 mark in the 40-yard dash and with his size, speed, and playmaking ability, the Jets got themselves a steal in Mims with the 59th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Finally being activated off of injured reserve, Mims wasted no time making an impact for the Jets, showing strong effort in the running game and also catching four passes for 42 yards.

Sam Darnold targeted him seven times as Mims played 45 snaps in total.

With Mekhi Becton quickly establishing himself as one of the best young offensive tackles in the NFL and now Mims proving he can make an instant impact, the Jets have at least a glimmer of hope that didn’t previously exist.

Mims is perhaps the only young offensive skill player (WR, RB, TE) the Jets will actually build around beyond this season. Having him in the fold is massive for this team’s evaluation purposes, and hopefully, the Jets will continue to feed him the football and build his confidence.
