2021 NFL Draft: Five head coaches who will be fired before the draft
By Kyle Edmond
Doug Marrone, Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4)
The year started off hot for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but quickly cooled off. Now, another name on the list of head coaches that are somehow still holding their job, Doug Marrone might finally be let go in Jacksonville.
Marrone took over in Jacksonville after week 14 of the 2016 season. While he was able to accomplish a winning record at 10-6 in his first full season, the last two have been a tough road, accumulating just 11 wins combined during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Now, the Jaguars are 1-4 and the seat under Marrone is heating up.
This feels a little like Hue Jackson’s tenure in Cleveland. Jacksonville’s 2020 roster was built for disaster and Marrone has actually done a decent job at keeping the team competitive. However, tanking this year to rebuild next year could also spell the end of Marrone’s tenure.
Most expected Jacksonville to move on from Marrone last year, but given their attempt to tank it makes sense for them to ride out another year of Marrone’s contract and bring in a new head coach with the new quarterback and overhauled roster.
The 2021 NFL Draft will be an important one for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but odds are Marrone won’t be the one helping call the shots. If he posts a losing record for the third straight season, which seems likely, it will be difficult to make a case for him to stick around.
