Jeremy Chinn outplaying Isaiah Simmons and other rookie surprises
3. Justin Herbert is a star in the making
Justin Herbert passed on the chance to be the QB1 of the 2019 NFL Draft to return to Oregon for one more season, and many (including me) criticized him for that decision.
It didn’t end up costing Herbert much in terms of his draft standing. He still went sixth overall to the Los Angeles Chargers and a few people were surprised by that considering every single throw of Herbert’s had been micro-analyzed.
Being a four-year starter at Oregon, Herbert was under the microscope in a big way, and while Joe Burrow’s exceptional 2019 campaign got him picked first overall and Tua Tagovailoa’s natural talent and intangible qualities got him picked shortly after that, Herbert was known for being the guy who was too quiet and too erratic at times with his ball placement.
There are still legitimate critiques with Herbert’s game like ball placement, reckless throws into dangerous coverage, and other minor details, but he’s shocked everyone by looking like a complete star in his first four NFL games.
The Chargers are 1-4, but Herbert is completing over 68 percent of his passes with nine touchdown throws and just three picks.
It appears as though the waiting period for Los Angeles in finding Philip Rivers’ long-term replacement is over.
