NFL Draft 2020: Ranking rookie performances through Week 4
1. Chase Young, EDGE, Washington Football Team
He’s only played in two full games thus far, but Chase Young is still the top player in the rookie rankings right now. Young has looked dynamic coming off the edge, showcasing his speed, power, and athleticism that got him drafted so high. His strip-sack against Philadelphia was a phenomenal play, where Young demonstrated good balance and coordination to force the fumble. His tool set is going to take him to incredible heights, and he’s the favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
2. Tristan Wirfs, OT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
If not for Young, Tristan Wirfs would be at the top of the list. Analysts had him ranked everywhere amongst the four top tackles in the 2020 NFL Draft, yet he’s been the best so far. Wirfs has looked very good in pass protection using his hand placement, and quick feet to frame rushers. He’s also been effective in the run game, using his lower body strength to displace defensive linemen. Wirfs is well on his way to be a top lineman in football.
3. Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati Bengals
2020 NFL Draft first overall pick Joe Burrow lands at three on the list through four games. Despite some very suspect offensive line play in Cincinnati, Burrow has looked pretty polished so far. While his deep accuracy has left a bit to be desired, Burrow has looked comfortable maneuvering the pocket, stays poised under pressure, and has flashed very good ball placement from 0-20 yards. His ability to extend plays has come in handy as well, and Burrow looks as advertised so far in the NFL.
4. Antoine Winfield Jr., SAF, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Buccaneers look like big winners already from the 2020 NFL Draft, as they got great value in Antoine Winfield Jr. in round two. Winfield Jr. has been a key chess piece for the Todd Bowles defense so far, playing some single high, some deep half, and making plays near the line of scrimmage as well as in man coverage. His instincts are off the charts and he’ll only get better.
5. Justin Herbert, QB, Los Angeles Chargers
Most didn’t think it would happen this fast, but Justin Herbert has had a stellar start to the season for the Chargers. His live arm and athleticism were big pluses in his game pre-draft, and he’s shown that off in droves so far. Herbert’s deep ball looks excellent early on, and he can create when things break down. It’s too early to call him QB2 yet, but Herbert looks to be on a mission to prove people wrong.
