Dallas Cowboys are favorites to land safety Earl Thomas
The Dallas Cowboys are favorites to land safety Earl Thomas.
2020 has been a bizarre year for everyone, but it’s been especially abnormal for Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas.
Thomas, who signed a four-year contract last offseason with the Baltimore Ravens worth $55 million, is apparently about to get released by the Ravens for conduct detriment to the team, but it’s not just a scuffle in practice that’s going to cause him to be cut.
In a disturbing series of events documented by TMZ.com back in April, Thomas was allegedly held at gunpoint by his wife. That story has somehow flown way under the radar, but the Ravens’ Leadership Council apparently decided that whatever was going on with Thomas on and off the field was enough that they didn’t feel he should be on the team.
And despite a massive dead cap hit for the Ravens and sunk cost, the team is apparently willing to take the advice of the Leadership Council and cut him loose.
The Cowboys, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, are the leading candidates to sign him if the Ravens do end up cutting him.
Thomas has been vocal about wanting to play for the Cowboys in the past, and the Cowboys have certainly shown a willingness to take on guys who are character concerns in the past.
Hopefully, this is not another bizarre Antonio Brown situation.
Since Thomas was seen flipping off his own team’s sideline has the last image of him in a Seahawks uniform, riding off the field on a cart with a serious injury, it has seemed like there’s just something off there.
Thomas is still one of the best safeties in football on the field, but the off-field issues have grown substantially in the last two years and they are very concerning at this point.
There’s no question that Thomas would be a massive asset to the Dallas Cowboys if he were to sign there. The Cowboys were one of the teams rumored to be interested in former Jets safety Jamal Adams in a trade, but they ultimately didn’t want to pay the hefty price tag.
Now, they are likely to get him at a greatly reduced cost in terms of the financials. Hopefully, this inevitable release from the Ravens is the wake up call Thomas needs. It’s obviously very concerning that the Ravens are willing to release him despite his on-field impact and the financial ramifications.
The Cowboys may protect themselves with low guarantees or just a one-year deal, but it seems like that is where one of the best safeties in the NFL is headed as Dallas has assembled one of the most talented rosters in the NFL.
