2021 NFL Draft: Early look at Iowa State’s Brock Purdy
2021 NFL Draft: Early look at Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.
If you’re an NFL team in need of a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, you’re in luck.
The 2020 NFL Draft was pretty loaded at the quarterback position, including three players taken in the top six selections and four in the first round overall.
So far in the 2020 offseason circuit, three quarterbacks are pretty typically projected to go in the top 10 of the 2021 NFL Draft: Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.
There are plenty of other players to consider as potential first-round candidates beyond those guys as well, including Iowa State’s Brock Purdy.
Purdy has been outstanding in his first two seasons
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior has been outstanding in his first two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Cyclones, completing nearly 66 percent of his passes with 43 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, and 13 rushing touchdowns.
One of Purdy’s top attributes at this point? His ability to make throws under pressure.
Purdy has shown tremendous poise under pressure and the ability to make accurate throws with defenders bearing down on him.
At this point, it’s a little too early to make any final determinations on Purdy’s game but he’s shown the ability to work through progressions, make throws to every level of the field, and use his escape-ability to create offense with his legs or make throws on the run.
Right now, Purdy’s game is more about timing and accuracy than velocity. He’s not the biggest or most athletic prospect at the quarterback position, but he is a playmaker who has shown poise beyond his years up to this point.
If he can take another step forward in 2020, he might be in the discussion for the top 50 of the 2021 NFL Draft and maybe the first round the year after that.
