2020 NFL Draft: First-Round re-draft with completely random draft order
Re-picking the 2020 NFL Draft in an alternate universe where the order is randomized.
The process that the league uses to determine the NFL Draft order works well. The bad teams need the most help, so they get the first picks. It’s simple, easy and just makes sense. However, let’s get a little crazy with what could have happened before we completely turn away from the 2020 NFL Draft.
In this re-draft scenario, the Cincinnati Bengals do not get the first overall selection based on their 2-14 record in 2019. Instead, the 2020 NFL Draft order is completely determined by a random generator. This would obviously be crazy, but it is still a fun practice to think about.
This idea comes completely from the Locked On NFL Draft Podcast with Trevor Sikkema and Benjamin Solak. I had so much fun listening to Sikkema and Solak go through this practice earlier this week that I wanted to do one for myself. Make sure to check that podcast out as it is undoubtedly a great listen that is worth your time.
This is obviously a ridiculous and unrealistic practice. We are just having some fun here. Kick back, relax and see who your favorite team is able to land in this 2020 NFL Draft re-draft scenario.
Notes: All 32 NFL teams make one pick in this re-draft scenario (Sorry Dolphins’ fans). Also, the draft order was determined simply by entering all 32 NFL teams in the List Randomizer at RANDOM.ORG.
The Dallas Cowboys were able to put together an incredible 2020 NFL Draft class, finding plenty of impact players throughout all seven rounds. However, snagging Chase Young with the first overall pick would obviously have been better. The Cowboys snag the No. 1 pick in this random order re-draft and add an incredible playmaker on the edge to the mix.
The Las Vegas Raiders hit the jackpot here, landing the second overall pick. If the Raiders ever find themselves in this situation, the quarterback position has to be on the radar. Derek Carr is a solid NFL quarterback, but he is never going to be a guy who can lead the Raiders to the promised land. Joe Burrow can be that guy. Burrow would have been the perfect guy to lead the Raiders into Vegas. He is a natural-born leader who has all of the talent needed to be a franchise signal-caller.
The Chicago Bears did not have a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but they land at No. 3 here. The Bears would not have been able to pass up this opportunity to find their Mitchell Trubisky replacement and they bring Tua Tagovailoa into the mix.
If injuries were not an issue, Tagovailoa would have been in the running for the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. His durability is a major concern, but he undoubtedly has the talent and playmaking ability to be a star at the next level. The Bears need a long-term answer at the quarterback position, making Tagovailoa an easy choice.
