2021 NFL Draft: Trey Lance lands in top five of way-too-early mock draft
Indianapolis Colts’ projected win total: 8.2
Jamie Newman 2019 stats: 60.9% completion percentage for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions through the air. 180 carries for 574 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground.
Finding a long-term franchise quarterback stands out as the most important need for the Indianapolis Colts going forward. Philip Rivers will handle quarterback duties for 2020 and Jacoby Brissett will serve as his primary backup. The Colts did take Jacob Eason in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft and he was undoubtedly a worthy investment, but is he really the guy to lead them into the future?
If Eason shows enough to the Colts behind the scenes as a rookie, quarterback may not be much of a priority in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, Jamie Newman may simply be too talented for them to ignore.
Newman was impressive as the starting quarterback at Wake Forest last season, but has now transferred to Georgia and is set up for a big season under the direction of head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Newman has all of the physical tools needed to be a star at the next level but needs to become more consistent in order to reach his high ceiling.
In a fantastic situation at Georgia, expect Newman to have a big year and quickly rise the 2021 NFL Draft boards. There are some mental awareness questions with this prospect, but if he can learn to see the field a bit better, the sky is the limit. The Colts need to find a long-term answer at the quarterback position and in this mock draft, Newman stands out as the obvious choice.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ projected win total: 8.7
Travis Etienne 2019 stats: 207 carries for 1,614 yards and 19 touchdowns. 37 receptions for 432 yards and 4 touchdowns.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear ready to move forward with a Ronald Jones II/Ke’Shawn Vaughn combination at the running back position. While there is some upside in that duo, running back stands out as an obvious potential need for this team.
With Travis Etienne still on the board in this mock draft, the Bucs take their running back room to the next level. Etienne is the top running back prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft class. He is an incredibly fast and explosive receiver who is incredibly difficult to bring down by one defender. Etienne could come in and be an immediate impact playmaker for the Bucs and help take Tom Brady and company to the next level.
