2020 NFL Draft: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Draft Grades
By Evan Bachman
Antoine Winfield Jr. is known as the son of former first-round pick Antoine Winfield, who played 14 years as a corner for the Bills and Vikings and made three pro bowls. While many may know the name because of his father, but he is proving that he is also an outstanding football player.
Winfield Jr. is exactly what the doctor ordered in the second round for the Buccaneers. He has exceptional ball skills, his instincts are outstanding, he is great at reading the quarterback and flying to the football. When’s he’s asked to he can stick to receivers’ hips when covering one vs one. He did play some in the box for Minnesota, but I think he’ll be at his best in the NFL as a deep safety.
Winfield Jr. recorded seven interceptions in his last season for the Golden Gophers, which is very impressive because you don’t do that without an advanced ability to read the quarterback and great ball skills. This game-changing playmaking ability brings him up another level as a prospect.
The biggest concern for him is he is undersized (5-foot-9, 203 pounds), which puts him at a disadvantage against the run, as well as covering tight ends and tall wide receivers.
Ultimately, getting someone who fills their biggest need and is also a great prospect is a big win for the Buccaneers.
