Tight End

The Trey Burton experience is (finally) over. After one decent season and another plagued by injuries, the Bears cut ties with their former prized free-agent acquisition after signing former Packer Jimmy Graham to a two-year deal. It’s not just Burton that underperformed, nearly all tight ends on the roster were of little value to the offense last season, including former second-round pick Adam Shaheen, who looks to be on his way out of town.

There aren’t as many top-tier tight ends in this year’s draft as there are receivers, but with where Chicago is selecting in round two, they’ll be right in line with the value of what tight ends will be available.

Cole Kmet of Notre Dame is the far-and-away top tight end in this year’s class. He’s a legitimate plug-and-play option and would fit perfectly next to a veteran like Graham. If you love small school products as much as GM Ryan Pace, then maybe you fancy yourself Adam Trautman, out of Dayton.

Dayton doesn’t necessarily fit as well as Kmet or even Brycen Hopkins from Purdue or Harrison Bryant from Florida Atlantic, but for some odd reason, Ryan Pace can’t help himself with small school developmental pieces.
