2020 NFL Draft: Possible trade targets for the New York Giants
By David Glancy
The New York Giants have recently been linked with an upcoming trade heading into the NFL Draft. The trade doesn’t touch the impossible scenario the Giants would somehow move up to draft Chase Young, but rather the Giants could move starting tight end Evan Engram to the 49ers. Engram, the former 23rd overall pick in the 2017 draft is currently heading into his fourth season and with injuries being a point of concern, Engram could be moved before the Giants pick up his fifth-year option.
The 49ers are in search of new targets for Jimmy Garoppolo after the departure of Emmanuel Sanders, and Engram is known for his abilities as a receiver would give the 49ers a proven target to compliment Kittle in Shanahan’s offense rather than serve as a direct backup. The 49ers do not own any picks until the fifth round after their selection at 31st overall and are considering a trade for both of their first-round picks according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
It would be highly unlikely the 49ers would directly swap the 31st overall pick for a second tight end given Engram’s injury concerns, but with few mid-round picks, the Giants could put together a package including Engram to get back into the first round. After selecting one of Jedrick Wills Jr., Andrew Thomas or Tristan Wirfs with the fourth overall selection, the New York Giants could go a number of ways with the 31st overall pick.
The Giants own the fourth pick in the second round and could continue to build around Jones with the 31st and 36th overall picks. After drafting a tackle, Gettleman could double down and select the top interior lineman, center Cesar Ruiz if he is available at 31. Ruiz and a tackle would anchor the Giants line and allow the Giants to get the most out of Saquon Barkley and build around Jones.
If Ruiz is selected by the 31st pick, the New York Giants could turn their attention to their pass rush. The Giants temporarily addressed the rush through the $4.6 million signing of Kyler Fackrell but could look to add a long-term rusher early in the draft. Both Yetur Gross-Matos and A.J. Epenesa could fall between the late-first to early-second round of the draft and the Giants could look to address the rush before drafting again on day two.
Outside of Jabrill Peppers, the Giants are thin at the safety position entering the 2020 season. Xavier McKinney is unlikely to fall past the Dolphins third pick at 26, but LSU’s three-year starter Grant Delpit could be in play. Delpit was originally slated to go early in the first round entering the season, but given injuries causing him to miss the combine along with tackling concerns, he could fall to the early second round.
