2020 NFL Draft: Chargers make a big move up in this 2020 NFL mock draft
Opting not to re-sign Robert Quinn in favor of other players, the Dallas Cowboys have a need at edge rusher opposite Demarcus Lawrence. They have guys from previous drafts that could step such as Dorrance Armstrong and Joe Jackson, but none of them are as enticing as K’Lavon Chaisson.
Coming off an ACL from 2018, Chaisson played lights out in 2019 for the Tigers, showing speed, bend and an unrelenting motor. Additionally, Chaisson is athletic enough to play some off-ball linebacker, should the Cowboys want to use him in that fashion.
With the fifth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Dolphins managed to secure their quarterback of the future. Now with their second, first-round pick, they get their center for the future in Michigan’s Cesar Ruiz.
Ruiz was one of the most dominant offensive linemen in the country in 2019, showing an ability to move opponents off the ball with power and proper technique. Ruiz is a rock-solid center prospect who will pair well with 2018 third-round pick Michael Deiter.
Last year, the Raiders made strides to beef up their secondary by signing Lamarcus Joyner in addition to Jonathan Abram, Trayvon Mullen and adding Isaiah Johnson through the 2019 NFL Draft. While linebacker is certainly on the table after they released Tahir Whitehead, I have them adding LSU’s Kristian Fulton to complete their blossoming secondary. Fulton is a big, physical press corner who would provide a nice compliment to Mullen.
Continuing to rebuild their defense, here the Jacksonville Jaguars get the top safety in the 2020 NFL Draft in Xavier McKinney. Although corner is definitely in the discussion here at pick 20, safety is just as big of a need as cornerback. Mckinney offers positional versatility, with the ability to play free safety, in the box and even at nickel in certain situations.
Aside from corner once again, wide receiver is the biggest need for the Philadelphia Eagles. Here at 21, GM Howie Roseman has his pick of the litter with several enticing options. However the best receiver on the board at this point in the 2020 NFL Draft. Justin Jefferson is a quick-footed route runner who is a bit faster than given credit for. Jefferson can come in day one and being a reliable number one target for Carson Wentz.
After trading Stefon Diggs to the Buffalo Bills for a bevy of draft picks including this one, the Minnesota Vikings now have an opening at receiver opposite of Adam Thielen. The trade rumors surrounding Diggs stems back to the early weeks of the 2019 season and has since come to fruition.
As for Diggs replacement, the Vikings could do a lot worse than taking Denzel Mims. After an electric career at Baylor, Mims has had one of the best offseasons, that has included a solid week at the Senior Bowl and an even more impressive showing at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine. Mims is a plug and play receiver who can provide a big physical presence on the perimeter for the Minnesota Vikings.
Despite the New England Patriots’ apparent confidence in Jarrett Stidham going forward, I am still of the opinion that they take a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Losing the face of your franchise of the last twenty years is quite the blow to any ball club, and whoever is under center next year will never be the player Tom Brady was for them.
Having said that, if there is one team that could bring the best out in Jordan Love, it would be the New England Patriots. Love already possesses the arm talent and athleticism necessary for a quarterback in toady’s NFL, he just needs time to put it together.
Ideally, the New Orleans Saints could go receiver here to help out Drew Brees and take the pressure off of Michael Thomas. If Love is still on the board then we could potentially see Sean Payton get Brees’s heir apparent. Instead, they take LSU linebacker Patrick Queen with their first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Currently, the Saints starting linebackers are Demario Davis, Alex Anzalone, and Kiko Alonso. Davis is a good starter, however, Anzalone and Alonso have struggled with injury. Queen is a prototypical, three-down NFL linebacker who brings a high football IQ and plus tackling to an already good Saints defense.
