Los Angeles Chargers pass on QB early in 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft
When the Chargers go on the clock at No. 6 in this mock draft, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is already off of the board, but Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert is still there. I am not the biggest Herbert fan, but I will admit that it would be surprising to see the Chargers pass on Herbert here. That being said, I think it would be the right move.
Herbert has all of the physical tools to be a star quarterback at the next level, but he panics under pressure and does not read the entire field well. Herbert has some nice long-term potential, but I would not be betting on him with an early first-round selection. Instead, the Los Angeles Chargers should address their obvious need at offensive tackle.
Tristan Wirfs was already off of the board in this mock draft, but the Chargers are happy to sit back and bring Jedrick Wills Jr. into their offensive line mix. Wills is a mean and nasty run blocker who absolutely dominates at the point of attack. He is a bit of a thicker player so you would think that his game is built on power, but do not sleep on Wills’ ability to move in space.
He is quick off of the ball and blocks at the second level extremely well. Wills is also a fantastic pass protector who gets into his pass sets quickly and does a great job of maintaining half-man relationship. Simply put, Wills is a smart, athletic and powerful offensive lineman who shines in pass protection and as a run blocker.
The Chargers have an obvious need at the left tackle position and while Wills played on the right side in college, there is no reason to believe he could not handle left tackle duties at the next level. Forget a quarterback, the Chargers add a guy who they can place at left tackle and not have to worry about for the next ten years.
