2020 NFL Draft: Four teams find franchise QB in two-round NFL mock draft
The Bengals are looking for their franchise quarterback and the best one in this class is Joe Burrow from LSU. I know the Bengals are considering trading down from this pick and also have interest in Chase Young and Justin Herbert, but the best choice is the obvious one.
Burrow had a phenomenal senior season throwing for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns. He had a completion percentage of 76.3% and threw for an average of 10.8 yards per play. Burrow gives the Bengals the best chance at winning football games over any other player.
The Bengals need a change from veteran Andy Dalton who has been the team’s quarterback for nine seasons. Last year’s fourth-round pick Ryan Finley did not provide much of a spark. The two combined for only two wins last season in Zac Taylor’s first year with the team, which is why Burrow should be their pick.
Biggest Needs: QB, IOL, LB
The Redskins may be tempted to take Tua Tagovailoa if they feel that Dwayne Haskins is not their franchise quarterback after one season. Ron Rivera has now taken over this franchise and brought in a familiar face in quarterback Kyle Allen, who was in Carolina with Rivera last season.
I believe the temptation is undoubtedly there, but ultimately, the Redskins let Haskins and Allen compete for the starting gig in 2020. Selecting Chase Young is the smartest decision for the team and reminds me of Nick Bosa but even better of a player. Plus both Bosa and Young played for Ohio State.
Young put up monster numbers in 2019 racking up 46 total tackles, 16.5 sacks and six forced fumbles. A player like Young is hard to pass up but it is possible the Redskins trade out of this spot for a quarterback-needy team like the Dolphins or the Chargers to gain multiple draft picks.
Biggest Needs: Edge, CB, OL
The Chargers move up three spots to land their franchise quarterback and select Tua Tagovailoa from the Crimson Tide. They give up two third-round draft picks, one this year and next year, but get a guy who can sit this season behind veteran Tyrod Taylor.
Injuries have plagued Tua but he has put up solid numbers when he is healthy. His completion percentage is near 70% the last two seasons and he threw for 30 or more touchdowns both seasons as well.
Life after Phillip Rivers will sure be different for Anthony Lynn and company but Tua’s skill set is perfect for what the Chargers need moving forward on offense and could spark their 2020 season.
Biggest Needs: QB, OT, LB
The Giants take the best offensive tackle in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tristan Wirfs from Iowa, and fill their most dire need. Second-year quarterback Daniel Jones will get some much-needed protection here and Jones could also use a new receiver in the later rounds to throw to in 2020.
The Giants have veteran left tackle Nate Solder on the roster and on the right side of the offensive line they have 24-year old Nick Gates. Wirfs would bolster this offensive line and would be a franchise player who can take over for Solder once he decides to retire.
Biggest Needs: OT, Edge, S
