One-and-Done NBA-style first-round 2020 NFL mock draft
By David Glancy
The Bengals will retain the rights to the first overall pick and will use the selection to draft their quarterback over the next decade. While the Bengals have the option to take any quarterback in college football, they select 2019 Heisman Trophy winner and national champion, Joe Burrow.
Despite being an older option, Burrow was college football’s premier passer and has proven his ceiling could be the highest out of any quarterback if he can replicate his success can from LSU to the NFL.
Although the Redskins selected Dwayne Haskins with the 15th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Redskins will not be able to pass over the “generational talent” of Trevor Lawrence. With new coach Ron Rivera noting the position is open, the Redskins would select the most talented eligible quarterback since Andrew Luck was selected in 2012.
While Lawrence may overly rely on his arm and force passes at times, he has the arm strength, accuracy and size to become a Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback if selected by the right team.
The Lions would likely take Young in the upcoming draft if he is available with the third pick. That will not be the case unless a team moves up to the second spot to take a quarterback, but in this scenario, the Lions select the elite defender.
Young was arguably the most talented player in the country and led the nation in sacks with 16.5 despite missing two games due to an NCAA infraction. The Lions will continue with a healthy Matthew Stafford in 2020 and begin their defensive rebuild with college football’s most dominant defender.
The Giants have needs on both sides of the ball but will focus on adding the cornerstone of their line. After drafting Daniel Jones sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Giants will want to protect their franchise quarterback and strengthen the line for star running back, Saquon Barkley.
Jones threw for over 3,000 yards and 24 touchdowns as a rookie despite starting the season behind Eli Manning and picking up midseason injuries. Dominant lineman, Penei Sewell won the Outland Trophy as a sophomore and has only allowed one sack over his two seasons as a starter. In this 2020 NFL mock draft, the New York Giants add arguably the best offensive lineman in college football to anchor their front.
