QB. Alabama. Tua Tagovailoa. 13. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 3. player

TRADE

The Los Angeles Chargers, who have been one of the NFL’s more aggressive teams in 2020 free agency signing the likes of:

  • CB Chris Harris Jr.
  • OT Bryan Bulaga
  • DL Linval Joseph

as well as trading for offensive guard Trai Turner from the Carolina Panthers.

The Chargers have gone all-in but they are missing that one all-important piece — the franchise quarterback. They could go from one of the most aggressive teams in free agency to one of the most aggressive teams in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Tyrod Taylor likely can do a capable job in the meantime, but the Chargers should make sure they get the guy they want in Tagovailoa, provided that’s the case, even if it means basically depleting their draft capital.

Tagovailoa is an unbelievable talent when healthy, and according to everything we’ve seen and heard, he’s back to 100 percent with a couple of weeks to go before he has an NFL destination.

In just about every mock draft scenario, the Miami Dolphins are the team that winds up with Tagovailoa. What if the Chargers make the Lions an offer they can’t refuse? The Dolphins may not want to part with their other first-round picks in order to move up but they could make a comparable offer to what the Chargers are giving here. They have even more capital next year to play with as well.

But perhaps the Dolphins are content to let this play out.

Even if the Dolphins covet Tagovailoa, the Chargers could make the first move, leaving Miami in the dust. I also love the idea of the Chargers making another trade in this draft…

TRADE

So, this three-round mock draft for the Chargers ends here. The Chargers send the 71st overall pick this year and a conditional fourth-round pick, perhaps based on games played or other factors, to the Washington Redskins for disgruntled left tackle Trent Williams.

Adding Williams with a third-round pick is better than anything the Chargers are going to be able to do in that draft slot in all likelihood, and Williams would complete a revamped line that would look, from left-to-right, like this:

LT: Trent Williams
LG: Dan Fenney
C: Mike Pouncey
RG: Trai Turner
RT: Bryan Bulaga

Williams wants a new contract, but with a rookie quarterback coming in, the Chargers will be able to afford that.

With just two moves, the Chargers can fortify their offense now and into the future, providing Tua Tagovailoa an elite offensive line and a tremendous defense.
