2020 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts late-round wide reciever targets
3. Gabe Davis, UCF
Of all the guys mentioned, this is the one who has the highest chance in my opinion to be an elite NFL wide receiver. Gabe Davis was an absolute force in 2019 for UCF and showed serious talent.
Like Gandy-Golden, Davis has an incredible catch radius and can jump out of the stadium for 50/50 balls. He is sneaky strong, which shows in his excellent hand fighting and blocking. Physically there are no questions about how Davis can transition to the next level.
As far as a route runner Davis is sort of all over the place. Sometimes he overruns his routes or adds unnecessary movement to them that doesn’t create separation and rather hurt his ability to get open. He also ran a very limited route tree, which means he was just a bit above average with not many routes to master.
On the flip side, Davis usually finds ways to get open, which is really all you can ask for out of your top target. He also has great long speed and is really talented at tracking deep balls as a result. He has also been a beast in the red zone during his collegiate tenure and is totally a guy who can get double-digit touchdowns.
What he lacks in attentiveness he more than makes up for in pure ability. Right now he is being mocked as a Day 3 guy, and that is just an absolute steal. A guy with this kind of prowess should surely be taken before the fourth-round, but because of how insanely deep this wide receiver class is, you will see many guys drafter far below their value.
If Davis is on the board at pick 122, the Indianapolis Colts should really consider taking him and having him fight Zach Pascal for a starting role in camp.
