Defense. Isaiah Simmons. player. 31. Clemson. 4. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis

After an outstanding Scouting Combine, Clemson do-it-all defender Isaiah Simmons will likely continue to climb up draft boards everywhere. For me, Simmons actually falls a spot from his frequent pairing with the Detroit Lions, but at this point, I can’t imagine he is not selected in the top five of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The best word that I can use to describe Isaiah Simmons on the defensive side of the ball is playmaker. Whether he is blitzing and bringing down the quarterback, filling a hole a walloping a ball carrier at the line of scrimmage or dropping back in coverage and making a play on the ball, Simmons always seems to make a big play.

He has the speed to chase down ball carriers and the athleticism to cover wide receivers man-to-man down the field. While he may miss a play here and there, he always seems to come through when his team needs him.

Simmons can be a perfect ball of clay and swiss army knife for the right coach. With head coach Joe Judge and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham both spending time in New England under Bill Belichick, they likely have learned how to creatively utilize versatile players like Simmons. Now after releasing two linebackers in Alec Ogletree and Kareem Martin, the Giants have a real hole at linebacker.

Isaiah Simmons is much more than just a linebacker. He can play inside or outside linebacker, either safety position, inside and outside corner and even edge rusher. He proclaimed his position to be “defense” at the combine and the Giants could certainly use a guy like Simmons on theirs.
