2020 NFL Draft: Post-combine two-round 2020 NFL mock draft with trades
I struggled a bit on which direction to go for the Carolina Panthers with this pick. Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown stands out as a worthy choice, but his poor performance at the combine could scare the top 10 teams away. The Panthers could consider taking Love and making him their new franchise quarterback, but it still feels a bit early for him with so much talent still on the board.
Instead, the Panthers make it a run of offensive tackles by selecting Tristan Wirfs at No. 7 overall. Wirfs had an impressive three-year career at Iowa, primarily playing the right tackle position. He showed incredible athletic upside on tape and plenty of natural power at the point of attack. Wirfs moves extremely well in space and shows impressive ability as both a run blocker and pass protector.
Wirfs has been considered a premier 2020 NFL Draft prospect for a while now, but his value may have been taking to the next level with his incredible performance at the combine. Wirfs measured in at 6-foot-5, 320 pounds with 34-inch arms, proving that he has plenty of size and length for the offensive tackle position.
However, it was his performance in the combine that drills that really matter. Wirfs set the combine record for offensive linemen in both the vertical jump (36.5-inches) and the broad jump (10-foot-1-inch) showing off his incredibly explosive athleticism.
He also led all offensive linemen at the 2020 combine in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.85 seconds and showed off his quickness with impressive times in the three-cone (7.65 seconds) and 20-yard shuttle (4.68 seconds). Simply put, Wirfs had an incredibly impressive combine performance and has likely cemented himself as a top 10 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Offensive tackle does not stand out as the most obvious need for the Panthers. However, Greg Little has not exactly proven himself at the NFL level and Taylor Moton will be a free agent after the 2020 season. This position could quickly a major position of need for this team and Wirfs is an incredibly talented prospect who could provide immediate and long-term value for this team.
