New York Giants: Top 5 needs for the 2020 offseason
By Andrew Kim
Here are the New York Giants’ top 5 needs for 2020, as they will have many options this offseason under new head coach Joe Judge.
The New York Giants went 4-12 last season, finishing second to last in the NFC East. With Pat Shurmur out at head coach, they enter the offseason with a brand new staff under general manager Dave Gettleman. Former special teams coordinator, wide receivers coach, and assistant head coach Joe Judge (New England Patriots) comes in as a first-time head coach.
Jason Garrett, former nine-year head coach (Dallas Cowboys), will call the plays at offensive coordinator. Patrick Graham (Miami Dolphins) is taking over as the assistant head coach/ defensive coordinator, which could signal a change back to the 4-3 defense. Freddie Kitchens, former one-year head coach (Cleveland Browns), is relegated as the tight ends coach.
Free Agency preview
With around $62 million (ranked 8th in the NFL) in cap space, the Giants should be active in free agency this offseason. They have a few key free agents coming up like offensive tackle Mike Remmers, defensive lineman Leonard Williams (who they traded for prior to the trade deadline with the New York Jets), and edge rusher Markus Golden.
Linebackers David Mayo and Deone Bucannon are also pending free agents, along with four wide receivers (Cody Latimer, Corey Coleman, Russell Shephard, and Cody Core).
Tagged under their names, site expert Dan Schmelzer and contributor Jacob Schyvinck give their differing seven-round mock draft for the New York Giants.
Draft preview
In the 2020 NFL draft, the Giants start off with the fourth selection overall and have seven selections currently throughout rounds one through seven (compensatory picks not included).
A new decade of G-Men football begins without quarterback Eli Manning. However, quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley gives them a young tandem on offense for the future. Their defense, however, needs an overhaul if they want a chance to compete next season.
If the Giants fill their pressing needs this offseason, they may win a few more games in 2020.
