Detroit Lions 2020 NFL Draft: Pinpointing five logical first-round targets
A.J. Epenesa, DL, Iowa
The most likely trade down scenario for the Detroit Lions is a deal with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins hold three first-round 2020 draft picks, including the fifth overall pick, and are obvious suitors for Tua Tagovailoa. It would not be surprising to see the Lions simply trade back a couple of spots with the Dolphins, pick up extra draft capital and still have the same choices as they would have had at five. In this scenario, guys like Okudah, Brown and Simmons are still options.
That being said, if the Lions end up trading back a bit further, we have to consider other options. A.J. Epenesa is unlikely to be a player on their radar in the 3-5 pick range, but if they fall back any further, he stands out as a potentially strong fit for the team.
Unlike Simmons, Epenesa feels like a guy who Patricia would love. He is a big and strong edge defender who uses elite size and power to physical overwhelm opposing offensive linemen. Epenesa is also an extremely technically-sound and disciplined football player who never finds himself out of position.
While his upfield burst, athleticism and bend around the edge are not elite, Epenesa is a more explosive player than he is given credit for. He is a rock-solid defensive end prospect who would be able to handle early-down work on the edge and move inside to make an impact on obvious passing downs. The Detroit Lions have needs across their entire defensive line and Epenesa could come in and help fill them in a variety of ways.
