2020 NFL Draft: CeeDee Lamb is WR1 in this first-round mock draft
Clemson do-it-all defender Isaiah Simmons is the beneficiary of the Detroit Lions owning a top-five pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Defensive-minded head coach Matt Patricia and the Lions have struggled mightily on that side of the ball this season. After Detroit selected a tight end in the first round last year in Patricia’s first year as a head coach, I’d bet they try to get him the pieces he needs to turn the team around on defense.
Isaiah Simmons is a player that can come in and play anywhere that he’s asked. Playing linebacker, safety and nickel corner at Clemson, I truly believe that Simmons is versatile enough to play any of the 11 positions on defense.
This season Simmons has totaled 93 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, six passes defended and two interceptions, displaying his versatility week in and week out.
Simmons can fly sideline to sideline to make plays in both the run and the passing game, can drop deep into a zone and jump on the ball as a safety and can cover wide receivers man to man in coverage filling in as a corner.
I’d bet Patricia would love the chance to snag a player like Simmons and work him into his defensive game plan. He can do anything and everything imaginable, making him incredibly valuable right away in the NFL.
A lot of times I feel that if a prospect doesn’t have a singular position then they have no position and may struggle to find a role at the next level. But Simmons has never had just one position to his name, so he has learned to play everywhere.
Wherever the Lions decide to deploy him, Simmons will help a struggling unit sure things up against anything the opposing offense throws at them. A true “Unicorn” player, Simmons will likely test well at the Combine and should fly up 2020 NFL Draft boards, maybe even reaching the top five as he did in this scenario.
