Terrell Lewis. 2. Alabama. EDGE. player. 829. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis

If offensive tackle is the Jets’ biggest need, edge rusher is not far behind. This franchise has lacked an impact edge rusher for many years and it has always held back their defensive upside. In the second round of this 2020 NFL draft scenario, the New York Jets take a shot on some upside at the position, bringing in Alabama’s Terrell Lewis.

Lewis is an extremely long and explosive rusher who always seems to be in the backfield. He is incredibly quick off of the ball and consistently gets great upfield burst. Lewis shows an inside pass-rush move that can be absolutely dominant and bends around the edge extremely well. When he is on the field, Lewis wins a majority of his matchups up front. Simply put, he does a great job of creating pressure and making the quarterback uncomfortable.

That being said, I would like to see him close on the quarterback a bit better. Despite consistently winning his pass-rush battles, Lewis only has six sacks on the year. Oftentimes, he comes in completely out of control and flies by the quarterback. His rush makes the quarterback uncomfortable more often than not, which is great, but I would love to see him work on becoming more under control when he gets in the backfield.

Durability is also a concern here. Lewis has struggled with injuries throughout most of his college career, including a torn ACL that forced him to miss the entire 2018 season. However, Lewis has stayed healthy this season which is a big step in the right direction

He is not a perfect player, but Lewis certainly can be a significant difference-maker at a premium position at the next level. He could be a major steal if the New York Jets were to land him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
