Iowa. 10. Tristan Wirfs. player. 30. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Offensive Tackle

The goal for the Jets this offseason should be pretty simple. Protect Sam Darnold. After Darnold infamously was “seeing ghosts” earlier in the season against the Patriots, it’s clear that he needs to be more comfortable when dropping back to pass if he wants to develop into the quarterback that they believe he can be.

Darnold has shown the talent and potential, and they got him some weapons this past offseason, so just giving him more time to find them and the peace of mind that he will have that time will go a long way in allowing that offense to take another big step forward.

Like Andrew Thomas, Tristan Wirfs is a force in both pass protection and run blocking. He has a great frame for an NFL tackle and the quickness and footwork to fend off some of the best edge rushers the league has to offer.

Additionally, Wirfs’ size, strength and tenacity make him dominant as a run blocker as well. He packs a powerful initial punch and dominates to the whistle, moving defenders with ease to open up running lanes.

While he may not be quite as polished or as proven as Thomas, Wirfs has similar potential and projection in the NFL. Wirfs has played both left and right tackle at Iowa, so the Jets could play him wherever they would like. Locking in some offensive line help is essential for the Jets in the 2020 NFL Draft and they get one of the best to round out the top 10 picks of the first round.
