2020 NFL Draft: First-round mock draft includes Jalen Hurts in the top 15
Have you seen the Chargers offensive line lately? Or over the past few years for that matter. They have been atrocious and may be the main obstacle standing in the way of Philip Rivers getting to his first Super Bowl.
Let’s take a look at the Chargers offensive line. It reads: Trent Scott, Dan Feeny, Scott Quessenberry, Michael Schoefield III, Sam Tevi. That should raise some eyebrows. The Chargers are a talented football team who, yes, have dealt with a lot of injuries, but have also not lived up to their potential when healthy. An upgraded offensive line would be a step in the right direction to make one last run before the window closes for good on Rivers.
After Thomas, the clear next-best offensive line prospect in this 2020 NFL draft class is Tristan Wirfs from Iowa. Wirfs is an incredible athlete with the size and strength to dominate in the trenches at the next level.
With experience at both right and left tackle, Wirfs can come in and play whichever position you need him to, but I’d guess the Chargers would want him protecting Rivers’ blindside. In pass protection, Wirfs is quick enough to beat rusher to the spot and counter their moves. He has quick feet and dominates the defender once he’s engaged.
As a run blocker, Wirfs is a dominant force. His size, strength and athleticism allow him to bully the opposition, turning them whichever direction he wants them to turn. He is incredibly physical and will always finish plays with high intensity.
The Chargers haven’t had the chance to draft this high in quite some time, and may not be at this position when it all pans out. But if they are, they should seize the opportunity in the 2020 NFL Draft to get a physically gifted, athletic freak to keep pressure off of Rivers and to create holes for Melvin Gordon or whoever lines up at running back for the Chargers next season.
