Two weeks ago, a matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos would have looked like a major mismatch. At that time, the Chiefs were rolling along at 4-0 while the Broncos were sitting at 0-4 on the season. Since then, the two teams have gone in completely different directions. Kansas City has lost its last two contests while Denver has come away with back-to-back victories.
This week, the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos will face off on Thursday Night Football in an extremely interesting matchup. This should be a fun game between two AFC West rivals.
I see two major keys to this game. First, let’s talk about the Broncos rushing attack. Kansas City has gotten absolutely gashed on the ground the last two weeks, with both the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans running the ball on their defense at will. I fully expect the Broncos to attack the Chiefs in a similar way. Expect a heavy dosage of Phillip Lindsay (who is averaging 4.7 yards per attempt this season) and perhaps even some Royce Freeman.
If the Broncos can be successful on the ground, it will help keep Patrick Mahomes and the explosive Chiefs offense off of the field. The longer Mahomes and company are on the sideline, the better chance the Denver Broncos have of winning this game. Both the Colts and Texans dominated the time of possession in their recent wins against the Kansas City Chiefs.
When Kansas City has the ball, all eyes will be on Mahomes and the passing attack. The Chiefs have struggled to protect their franchise quarterback in recent weeks and he has clearly been struggling with an ankle injury. They are still scoring points, but this offense does not look as impressive as it had. They clearly miss starting left tackle Eric Fisher who will not play against the Broncos.
The Broncos defense has improved in recent weeks, with Von Miller and company getting consistent pressure on the passer. Miller and the Broncos could give the Kansas City Chiefs fits up front in this one and if Mahomes’ ankle continues to be an issue, their ability to score may be limited.
I am also extremely interested to see Tyreek Hill in this one. Hill looked just as explosive as usual in his return to action last week. He should see a lot of Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. in this game.
