Miami Dolphins: Josh Rosen played as well as could be expected
All things considered, Josh Rosen played pretty well for the Miami Dolphins in his first start for the team on Sunday.
The Miami Dolphins have not exactly put Josh Rosen in a position to succeed. They are clearly tanking the 2019 season, and while I am sure Rosen is glad to be named their starting quarterback, there is nothing he can do to make them a consistent competitor this season.
Despite the obvious lack of talent surrounding him, Rosen played pretty well on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. In his first start for the Dolphins, Rosen completed 18-of-39 passes for 200 yards. Considering he was constantly running for his life and suffered through drops from his receivers, Rosen played well. If nothing else, he was better than his number lead on.
In particular, the Miami Dolphins quarterback played pretty well in the first half. On the Dolphins’ opening drive, Rosen led his team down the field for a scoring opportunity. The big play on that drive was a beautiful ball thrown down the right sideline for a 40-yard completion to DeVante Parker. Unfortunately, a missed field goal from 47-yards by Jason Sanders meant that the Dolphins left that drive with nothing.
Later in the first half, rookie wide receiver Preston Williams dropped a pass in the end zone and running back Kenyan Drake lost a fumbled on first and goal. Simply put, the Dolphins had a real chance to keep pace in the first half of this game, but they continually shot themselves in the foot. Rosen was not perfect, but these miscues that cost them so dearly were not his fault.
However, Rosen was able to lead the Dolphins to two successful field-goal drives in the first half, and Miami entered halftime only trailing the Cowboys 6-10. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off in the second half.
As Dallas poured it on in the second half, the Dolphins simply could not keep pace. Rosen was consistently running for his life in this game and that only got worse when the Cowboys knew they were passing as they played catch-up in the second half.
Rosen has found himself in as bad of a situation as possible with the Dolphins. This is clearly a team that has no interest in winning games and they lack the impact talent on both sides of the ball to do so. All things considered, Rosen played well on Sunday. However, there is only so much one guy can do.
