New York Giants: Daniel Jones could make his first NFL start in Week 3
The New York Giants appear willing to make a switch at the quarterback position.
The New York Giants have consistently backed Eli Manning as their starting quarterback for the 2019 season. However, after their putrid 0-2 start, things are changing.
When speaking to the media on Monday, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur was not quick to back Manning as their starting quarterback going forward. In fact, he clearly left the door open to rookie Daniel Jones taking over for Manning as soon as this week.
“We’re 0-2, there’s areas we got to get better so we’re going to address all areas and try to find ways to put a winning performance on the field,” Shurmur said, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.
After being asked directly if Manning would start at quarterback for the Giants in Tampa on Sunday, Shurmur would not commit.
“He’s been our starter to this point and I don’t want to talk about anything else moving forward at this point,” said Shurmur. Schwartz also added that a decision would be made about the starting quarterback by Wednesday’s practice.
Make no mistake here, Shurmur knows exactly what he is doing. He knows that not committing to Manning as the starting quarterback is going to get us talking and he knows the kind of pressure that it is going to put on both players. Him willing to do this easily proves that he is ready to make this move, and honestly, I would be surprised if Manning starts this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The New York Giants are not a good football team. They are not a team with realistic postseason expectations. Manning may give them a better shot to win right now than Jones, but it is not like he is giving them a great shot. Continuing to stick with the veteran is only holding this franchise down.
Giving Jones the keys to the franchise and seeing what he can do is the only logical move to make here. I am not a big Daniel Jones fan, but I am interested to see what he can do. Hopefully, he gets a chance to prove what he can do sooner, rather than later.
