Seattle Seahawks: Jadeveon Clowney could shift balance of NFC West
The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly agreed to the ‘parameters’ of a trade for star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. This move could vault them in the West.
The Seattle Seahawks signed Russell Wilson to a massive contract this offseason, and while they have all but completely dismantled the original Legion of Boom, there’s a new era beginning in Seattle.
That new era could involve former number one overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, who has refused to sign his one-year franchise tag tender with the Houston Texans all offseason.
Clowney and the Texans have a relationship that seems beyond repair at this point and the Texans have had to sit back in a state of uncertainty as he allegedly traveled around to meet with the brass of other NFL teams.
Jay Glazer, who hasn’t broken a big football story in a while it feels like, reported that the Seahawks and Texans have the parameters of a trade in place for Clowney.
Clowney is choosing his destination, so for the Seahawks, this should be more than just a one-year rental, but because of the timing of this trade, they are unable to negotiate a long-term contract with Clowney at this point.
Still, this would indicate that Clowney is now the cornerstone piece of their defensive rebuild, and I’m here for it.
The Seahawks maximized value this offseason for Frank Clark, trading him to the Kansas City Chiefs for an extra first-round pick. Unfortunately, they lost first-round defensive end LJ Collier to injury, but Seattle is rightly excited about the young talent all over its roster and adding Clowney can truly help them change the pecking order in the NFC West.
The Seahawks have Bobby Wagner, who is still a superstar in today’s NFL, but every team needs a dynamic presence in the pass rush it seems like to compete all the way through to the end come February.
The Seahawks will apparently now have that piece.
Clowney, as good as he has been for Houston, has not reached his peak in my opinion. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him and the Seahawks could be getting him at the absolute best time.
If he can stay healthy — and that had been somewhat of an issue for him — there’s a chance this could end up being quite the steal for Seattle.
Last year at this time, the Chicago Bears acquired Khalil Mack for a hoard of draft selections and it seemed to completely turn their fortunes as a franchise around for the foreseeable future. Perhaps this can do the same for Seattle.
It doesn’t give them the best defensive player in their division — that title belongs to Aaron Donald. It very well may give them the second best, however, and because they have the division’s best quarterback, this move could shift the division title winds in their favor for 2019.
