The Jacksonville Jaguars locked linebacker Myles Jack into a long-term extension on Saturday. This was a smart move for a team that will have to make some tough decisions in the near future.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars have extended linebacker Myles Jack. The four-year extension is worth up to $57 million, with $33 million of it being guaranteed. The extension will kick in after the upcoming season, locking Jack in with the Jaguars over the next five seasons. Schefter also notes that Jack is now the third-highest paid inside linebacker in the NFL, behind only Bobby Wagner and C.J. Mosley.

A knee injury during his final college season forced Jack to fall down the draft board during the 2016 NFL Draft. However, this allowed the Jaguars to scoop him up early in the second round (36th overall) and he has quickly become one of the best off-ball linebackers in the entire NFL.

Jack is an athletic freak at the linebacker position, consistently ranging from sideline-to-sideline to make plays. He is an aggressive and productive run stopper who can make plays against inside and outside runs. On top of that, he is a fantastic coverage linebacker who is a real weapon for the Jacksonville Jaguars against difficult to defend tight ends and running backs.

Jack started a handful of games with the Jaguars as a rookie, but he has been a full-time starter with the team the last two seasons. He has made a consistently impact for the Jags at the off-ball linebacker position and is a major reason for their defensive success in recent years.

At only 23-years-old (soon to be 24), locking Jack up was an obvious move for the Jacksonville Jaguars. That being said, they have a lot of big names coming off of the books in the next few years. Guys like Leonard Fournette, Calais Campbell, Marcell Dareus and most importantly, Jalen Ramsey will also be due for extensions soon, and it’s not like the Jags have a ton of cap space to work with.

Tough decisions are going to have to be made with some of these players, but one of them is already out of the way. Jack is now locked in for the long-term. No matter how you look at it, that is good news for the Jaguars.
