Houston Texans & Miami Dolphins: Breaking down the blockbuster trade
The Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins came together on a massive blockbuster trade involving OT Laremy Tunsil and WR Kenny Stills.
It’s rare to see massive trades in the NFL, but it’s even more rare to see trades like we’ve just seen the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins make involving left tackle Laremy Tunsil as the centerpiece.
According to multiple reports from ESPN and NFL Network, the Miami Dolphins have agreed to a trade with Houston — which already traded franchise player Jadeveon Clowney earlier on Saturday — involving Tunsil, wide receiver Kenny Stills, and two first-round draft picks.
There are more players and picks involved.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, here are the terms of the trade.
For the Dolphins
The #FishTank is on. I saw that on Twitter and I don’t know where to properly give credit for its origin, but I didn’t invent it.
It’s appropriate, however.
The Dolphins traded a franchise cornerstone piece in Laremy Tunsil, and they got appropriate value in return. Two first-round picks, a second-round pick, and two players who are probably going to play for them at least this year?
That’s a huge haul.
Davenport is part of the reason the Texans are making this trade, but perhaps he can develop into a swing guy in time. The centerpiece for the Dolphins are the three high picks Houston is giving up to them, and even if those picks end up being in the mid-late portion of round one, they are major assets for Miami.
For the Texans
The Texans now have to operate each offseason as though the free agency signing period is their draft, which is good news for their fan base.
Houston now has two of the most coveted positions in sports locked in with DeShaun Watson at QB, Laremy Tunsil at left tackle, and they have also got a superstar defender in JJ Watt to go along with an elite pass catcher in DeAndre Hopkins.
This is Bill O’Brien’s team, officially, and he’s proving he couldn’t care any less about the draft when it comes to getting wins now.
The Texans had to take desperate measures to protect Watson, but they probably could have just traded up a couple of spots for Andre Dillard and avoided this whole situation.
Still, with Dillard in Philly and the Texans having no solution at left tackle, this is a bit of good news for their fans as their biggest asset is now protected by a good young tackle in Tunsil.
