49ers backup quarterbacks

Nick Mullens and CJ Beathard are not the ‘biggest’ names on this list but they are both players who have proven themselves capable of starting games at the NFL level.

One of these two could be on the move, though the 49ers have played their cards close by saying they intend to keep three QBs on the active roster.

They can certainly afford that luxury, and they don’t have to be in any rush to help other teams out, but there is certainly value in acquiring an extra fourth- or fifth-round pick for a guy that might not play any role on your team this year, barring injury.

There’s also the risk of injury to Jimmy Garoppolo, and what might happen here if the 49ers trade a guy and all of a sudden only one is left.

At the same time, many NFL teams keep only two quarterbacks and do just fine throughout the season. With a much deeper roster than last year, every spot matters for the 49ers.

Teams like the Colts and Broncos could very well be interested in players like Mullens and Beathard.
