New York Giants: Daniel Jones passes yet another test
Although it wasn’t flawless like his first performance, Daniel Jones passed yet another test for the New York Giants against the Bears.
After a stellar first (preseason) game in the NFL, all eyes were on New York Giants top draft pick Daniel Jones in his follow-up performance against the Chicago Bears on Friday night.
Jones, once again, did not disappoint.
Although Jones had two fumbles — one of them a botched snap from under the center and another after holding the ball far too long — he looked very crisp passing the ball, completing 11 of his 14 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown.
It is also notable that Eli Manning finished this game 4-for-4 passing with a touchdown.
Jones’ miscues came before some of his best throws of the night, so it was good to see a little adversity didn’t throw him off his game or give him the yips back there. Jones remained calm and made some awesome throws, especially his touchdown pass to T.J. Jones, which was lofted perfectly down the left sideline.
Jones had another really nice shot down the left sideline earlier in the game to Cody Latimer, a player who appears poised to play significant snaps for this Giants team in 2019.
Jones put the ball where Latimer had a chance to go win a one-on-one situation after looking off the deep safety, who ended up being way late in coverage. The Bears cornerback didn’t get his head around in time, and Latimer made a great play on the ball for a huge chunk play.
After Jones fumbled the ball, it looked like the Giants came right back out on their next possession and ran the play they were going to run. They are trying to get looks at this guy in different situations and this one involved him running play-action on a deep drop with his back to the defense. He ended up throwing the ball short, but the key here is how he came back from a mistake.
A dropped pass on 2nd and 11 caused the Giants to be put in an unfavorable 3rd and 11 situation, and on that 3rd and 11 play, Jones held the ball too long and had it stripped away.
How did Jones come back after that? The Giants put him in position to get into a bit of a rhythm, throwing a quick pass into the flat to the running back and then hitting a drag route for some big yards after the catch.
Jones is doing a few things really well.
- Keeping calm in the pocket
- Making accurate throws
- Putting proper air under deep throws
- Timing
What Jones has done is show everyone why he was considered a first-round prospect. That wasn’t a universally shared opinion, but one NFL team obviously felt like he was a top 10 player in this class. Jones is proving the Giants right, at least in the early goings of preseason action.
